A$AP Rocky Admits Felony Assault Trial ‘Hanging Over’ Him Has Been ‘Handicapping’ His Songwriting

Since A$AP Rocky got into an altercation in 2021 that led to an arrest, charges and a felony assault trial, the rapper has been reflecting on it in his music.
In a cover story interview with Variety published on Tuesday, May 6, the “Fashion Killa” rapper, 36, opened up about his time in the studio.
“It’s odd because as I get older, I’m more conscious about how I view myself,” Rocky told the outlet.
He added, “Describing my life sounds very braggadocious, and I want to figure out how to say it to where it feels more humble, relatable and sincere, as opposed to just s—ting on the next person or making the next person feel down — or just evoking negative shit out of people.”
When asked if he was writing about the trial, in which he was found not guilty, Rocky said it has been a source of inspiration.
“I’m writing about these past four or five years that I had this over me, and it’s been kind of handicapping me,” he admitted.
Furthermore, Rocky said he now has “trust issues” and it was a “lesson learned.”
“I can’t necessarily blame it on my last situation. But what I did learn is you’ve gotta accept that everybody’s not good people; you’re not gonna run into a solid person every time,” Rocky said, adding that “not everybody’s gonna handle situations like you.”
On Feb. 18, a jury in Los Angeles acquitted the rapper — who was accused of firing a semi-automatic handgun at his former friend and A$AP Mob member A$AP Relli in an altercation in November 2021 — of two charges of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
After the verdict was read, Rocky immediately jumped over the stand to hug his mother, sister and partner Rihanna. He told the jury, “Thank y’all for saving my life. Thank y’all for making the right decision.”
Before the trial began, he turned down a plea deal from prosecutors and opted for a jury trial instead of pleading guilty to one of two felony charges of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He was facing up 24 years in prison if found guilty.
On Monday night, Rihanna debuted her baby bump at the 2025 Met Gala, only hours after revealing the news of their third child on the way.
The following day, a source told PEOPLE the couple is “focused on family time.”
