Alan Alda’s ‘Sex Day’ Wisdom: Unexpected Cameo in The Four Seasons

Did you spot a familiar face in the new series, The Four Seasons?
Netflix’s new miniseries, inspired by the popular 1981 film, tips its hat to the original with a surprise appearance by none other than Alan Alda.
The series revolves around three couples – Nick (Steve Carell) and Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver), Kate (Tina Fey) and Jack (Will Forte), and Danny (Colman Domingo) and Claude (Marco Calvani) – whose close friendship is shaken when Nick decides to leave his wife. Despite this, they continue their tradition of seasonal vacations throughout the year.
Alda, who wrote, directed, and starred in the ’80s movie as the character now played by Forte, also served as a producer on this adaptation.
The Emmy winner makes a delightful cameo in the second episode, playing Anne’s beloved father, a character inspired by Sandy Dennis’s portrayal in the original film.
In the episode, Anne throws a surprise vow renewal for Nick, inviting their loved ones, unaware of his plans to end their marriage – plans known to all their friends except Danny. Her father, Don, is among the attendees, appearing first as he exits a black van, struggling to help a woman in a wheelchair.
Alda’s memorable scene occurs later when he encounters Kate and Danny in search of “the good bathroom.” The two friends, discussing Nick’s bagel run, seem delighted by the distraction Anne’s dad provides. The scene unfolds with a charming conversation about relationships.
Kate and Danny greet Don warmly, with Kate embracing him. “Mr. K., you came all the way from Florida for this?” Danny asks.
The three are all smiles as the father cheekily responds, “Well, your daughter only gets married a bunch of times, I guess.” Reflecting on his own life, he adds, “You know Anne’s mother would have really loved this. She loved outdoor parties.”
“You were together for a long time,” Danny comments, to which Don replies, “67 wonderful years.”
Kate then asks for marriage advice. “I don’t know. You know, communication. Try not to fuss about the small stuff,” he advises, before teasingly revealing how they kept things interesting. “But my wife did have this one thing… She’d kill me if I told you. But every once in a while we’d wake up and she’d say, ‘Congratulations! Take off your pants, it’s a sex day.'”
Danny and Kate laugh as Don continues, “You might think of trying that with your spouse. They’d be so grateful. It’s like a dog waking up and not knowing it’s Thanksgiving. And then all of the sudden all of these people come over and start dropping turkey and stuffing all over the ground.”
Kate then tells Don that she loves him and kisses his cheek. Breaking the sentimental moment, the proud dad excuses himself, saying, “This is going to be a memorable day. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I had real coffee this morning.”
Alda is also seen toward the end of the episode when Nick finally arrives at the ceremony. As Anne prepares to read her vows, she turns to him and says, “Dad, thank you.”
The episode concludes with a literal bang: Anne’s pottery barn explodes, possibly due to the kiln she fired up to create a custom wedding platter in the shape of a tombstone. The following episode reveals Nick and Anne’s official split, with Nick now dating his dental hygienist, Ginny, played by Erika Henningsen.
The cast also includes Julie Lester, Ashlyn Maddox, Jacob Buckenmyer, Taylor Ortega, Simone Recasner, Toby Edward Huss, Tommy Do, Chloe Troast, Jack Gore, and Cole Tristan Murphy.
Alda’s last small-screen appearance was in the 2022 television movie *Ray Donovan: The Movie*, reprising his role as Dr. Arthur Amiot. He’s also renowned for his roles as Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in *M*A*S*H* and Senator Arnold Vinick in *The West Wing*, both of which earned him Emmy Awards.
