Alfre Woodard’s Kids: Mavis & Duncan’s Untold Stories

Woodard and Spencer’s daughter, Mavis Spencer, was born on June 13, 1991.

Today, Mavis is renowned as a skilled professional show jumper and horseback rider. Her love for horses began in childhood, growing up in California.

“I wasn’t allowed to take lessons until I was five, so on my fifth birthday, I ran into my parents’ room at six in the morning begging to get on a horse. My parents found a barn for me to ride at and from there I never gave it up,” Mavis shared with Wellington International in 2023.

Since then, she has risen to the top of the equestrian world, but not without dedicated effort. After competing as a junior in college, Mavis became a working student and groomer for some of the most respected figures in the field.

“It taught me to always put your best foot forward and give one hundred percent to every opportunity that presents itself,” she told Wellington International about her experience.

Mavis returned to riding in 2014, and has since built a successful professional riding and show jumping career.

She has represented Team USA at the FEI Jumping Nations Cup, serves as an ambassador for US Equestrian, and competes as a Grand Prix level show jumper. According to her social media, she is currently based at Fioravanti Horse Farm in Rome, Italy, alongside her boyfriend, Christian Fioravanti.

Mavis credits much of her success to her parents. She has spoken about their unwavering support throughout her horseback riding journey, explaining that while they encouraged her to explore other interests, they ultimately championed her equestrian dreams.

Woodard discussed Mavis’ passion for riding, saying, “I could see her commitment and see that she was on her way.”

Mavis currently resides in Italy and, in a social media post from June 2024, shared her appreciation for the European lifestyle, citing the food, lower cost of living, and the considerate treatment of horses.

Beyond riding and show jumping, Mavis co-hosts the podcast “Slightly Stable,” where she delves into topics related to horses, life, and more. Prior to her riding career, she served as Miss Golden Globe in 2010. Stay tuned for more updates from Eternal Pen on other inspirational figures.

The equestrian has openly shared her close bond with her mother, particularly on social media.

In a May 2024 post dedicated to her mom, Mavis wrote, “I don’t know where I would be without your love, support and guidance. Your grace, power and mere presence inspire everyone to be smarter, funnier, kinder, more open and accepting, and a better human being all around.”

Duncan Spencer, 31, is Mavis’ brother.

In an interview, Mavis recounted how her parents strove to give her and her brother a normal upbringing despite their fame, instilling in them the value of hard work.

“My parents kept us really grounded. They made a huge effort to have us grow up as normally as possible, if there is such a thing,” she said.

Mavis also revealed that they taught them, “it is not who you are, but what you do that is important in life,” which is why she and Duncan never felt star-struck by the celebrities they were around growing up.

Duncan is a professional golfer in Arizona.
