Amerie’s Secret Separation: A New Chapter Begins

NEED TO KNOW
Amerie and Lenny Nicholson have been separated since 2023. The singer and her former manager began dating in 2007 before marrying in 2011, and share one son together. The “1 Thing” singer revealed she’s in the process of divorce during an interview ahead of the 2025 BET Awards.
Amerie and her husband, Lenny Nicholson, have split after more than a decade of marriage.
The “Why Don’t We Fall In Love” singer, 45, revealed the news during an interview with radio host and podcaster Angela Yee during the 2025 BET Awards weekend, ahead of the annual awards show on Monday, June 9.
“Amerie been locked in for a long time,” Yee, 49, said while making conversation.
The ladies were joined by singer Muni Long, 36, and Jasmine Linford, and had been discussing relationships.
“I was, but not now,” Amerie said.
Her admission seemed to catch the others by surprise. While talking, Amerie mentioned the word “divorced.”
“I missed that memo,” Linford said, with the “1 Thing” singer noting that she doesn’t usually share details about her personal life.
“Because everyone didn’t know that. I only mentioned it with Joe,” Amerie said, referring to a recent guest appearance on a podcast. “I told him about it. We talked about it. It came up inadvertently.”
She clarified that she and Nicholson were “going through” the divorce but had been separated since 2023.
According to reports, Amerie and her estranged husband began dating in 2007 and later married in 2011. The couple are parents to son River Rowe Charles, 7.
The two reportedly met through work, with Nicholson managing the “Paradise” singer’s career at one point.
“It takes a short time to get married and a long time to get divorced,” Yee said.
“That’s what they say,” the songstress replied before she was asked if she’s looking forward to dating again.
“Well, it’s been a couple of years since we’ve been separated,” Amerie explained in a snippet of the interview shared online.
In the full interview, the “Talkin’ to Me” artist shared more insight.
“All the relationships that we have I believe we have them because we’re supposed to learn something, and so everything is a blessing,” she said. “So I don’t believe in, like, placeholders … everything is a lesson to help you grow.”
“One thing that’s important, too, is to remember you want to find someone that you can amplify, that amplifies you,” Amerie added.
“Because sometimes — and this is not necessarily my situation — but when I really started looking at it and I really started thinking about how people pair off and what that is … You can be with someone where you stay the same. You can be with someone that can dim your light, and maybe you dim their light. You can be with someone who amplifies you and who you amplify.”
