Carnie Wilson Recalls the ‘Unacceptable’ Comment Made by Record Exec That Left Her ‘Sobbing’ in a Bathroom

- Carnie Wilson recalled how people commented on her weight when Wilson Phillips debuted, telling Billy Corgan on his Magnificent Others podcast that one record executive left her “sobbing”
- The exec later apologized, and Wilson told him how much he had hurt her
- She said she didn’t understand why people cared so much about her size compared to her two group mates, Chynna Phillips and sister Wendy Wilson
Carnie Wilson says a record executive said something so upsetting that she was left sobbing in the bathroom.
The Wilson Phillips alum, 57, along with Chynna Phillips and sister Wendy Wilson were recording their 1990 self-titled debut album, when an executive asked her, “ ‘What are we going to do about this weight problem of yours?’ “ she told Billy Corgan on the April 30 episode of his podcast, The Magnificent Others.

“I remember running into the bathroom and just sobbing,” Wilson said, sharing that “he wound up really apologizing for it because I said, ‘Unacceptable. Like, how you hurt me so badly when you did that.’ And he said, ‘I just can’t believe I said that. I am so sorry.’ ”
“It took years,” for him to apologize, she told Corgan, recalling that she said, “You’re so funny and so great. And then you f—ing were a—— for saying that to me. Why did you do that?”
“It’s like you lost control and you just really chose the wrong words. And were you really afraid that my fat was going to make us not successful?”
“See, if you’d been skinny, you would have sold 11 million,” Corgan quipped, referencing that the group’s debut sold more than 10 million albums globally, prompting Wilson to laugh and call them “motherf—ers.”
“That’s how they think,” the Smashing Pumpkins star said.

Wilson shared how she was positioned in the group’s music videos, saying, “It was always, ‘Hide Carnie in the videos. I had to stay in this light for my chin,’ “ she said, using her hand to illustrate how she was kept in the shadows from the chin down.
“That’s so humiliating,” Corgan said.
“But I sort of embraced my role. I kind of liked it. It was kind of like a power thing,” Wilson said. “I was different … and that’s part of the armor I’ve had.”
She shared that when the group wore lingerie for the video for their 1992 single, “You Won’t See Me Cry,” she was put in “these corsets that were sucking me in and trying to make me look as skinny as possible.”
“I was bleeding. I had sores on my waist from cinching and trying to look skinny. It was just awful,” she said.

“So what strikes me … if Wilson Phillips came out today, you would have been embraced in such a different way,” Corgan said. “You’ve had something to do with that body positivity stuff, but who you are and what makes you who you are, people would be so different. It must strike you as slightly ironic. “
“It’s ironic,” Wilson agreed, “but I never tapped into that negativity. I don’t like negativity. I feel like everybody that made fun of me was just unhappy and it was an easy thing to do … it’s sad because I love to lift people up … I could not understand why somebody would just make fun of me. Like, focus on the music. Who cares if I’m heavier than the other two?”
