Cate Blanchett Spills the Secret Behind Her Sole Wedding Photograph

Cate Blanchett may not possess numerous photographs from her nuptials to Andrew Upton, yet she undeniably holds remarkable recollections.

Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show Thursday, March 13, to discuss her impending thriller Black Bag, the 55-year-old performer disclosed why there exists merely a single photo from her 1997 wedding.

“When I tied the knot, which was quite some time ago, 27 years back,” Blanchett initiated before being sidetracked by a more recent image of herself and Upton, 59, that appeared on the studio display.

“Why, why am I doing it like that?” she humorously inquired, staring at the picture of herself laughing with her spouse. In the photograph, taken in March 2024, Blanchett is seated as she leans into Upton with a grin.

Refocusing, the Borderlands actress dubbed it “a miracle” to be wed “to the same individual” for such an extended period.

“I’m still married after 27 years.”

The Australian actress went on, “When we married, we had absolutely no funds. We couldn’t afford a photographer and we had two friends who were photographers.”

“One chap who became so intoxicated that he forgot to load film into the camera, and the other one had such a great time that he didn’t capture any images, resulting in our single wedding photo,” Blanchett told Barrymore, 50.

She subsequently described the solitary wedding picture they possess, which is “an indistinct image of us getting into the car, but I genuinely remember the evening because of it.”

The Disclaimer actress confessed she wasn’t always as joyful discussing that moment as she is at present.

“I was extremely sorrowful and quite disturbed that we didn’t have any photographs, but ultimately I’m somewhat pleased that I lack images because I then continuously strive to remember the evening,” she stated.

The Oscar winner and her spouse — a playwright, screenwriter, director, and even an actor in a few ventures — encountered each other many years ago while she was performing in a play by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov.

Since that moment, they have welcomed three sons, Dashiell, 23, Roman, 20, and Ignatius, 17, along with a daughter Edith, 10.

Although she previously shared with Vanity Fair in 1999 that she and Upton did not connect at first, once they finally began to date, everything progressed quite rapidly.

“He perceived me as aloof and I regarded him as arrogant,” she explained to the outlet back then. “And it merely illustrates how mistaken you can be. But once he kissed me, that was it.”

“After around 21 days” of dating, he proposed, “and I accepted,” Blanchett later recounted to Ellen DeGeneres in 2015.

Black Bag opens in theaters Friday, March 14.
