Inside Jeff Bezos’ $500 Million Superyacht, Koru: Everything We Know About the Billionaire’s Luxury Vessel

Jeff Bezos broke records when he purchased a custom sailing yacht estimated to be worth $500 million.

The Amazon founder was first reported to be eyeing the one-of-a-kind vessel in early 2021. The yacht, which was previously known as Project 271, was made by Dutch manufacturer Oceanco, according to Bloomberg.

By February 2023, the luxury yacht was seen for the first time at sea when it took a trial run in the North Sea from the Netherlands. Just two months later, Bezos and his then-girlfriend, Lauren Sánchez, were seen soaking up the sun while sailing around Mallorca, Spain.

The couple, who got engaged in May 2023 and are set to get married in June 2025, have traveled around the world in the luxury boat, which Bezos named Koru. Koru, which is estimated to be the largest sailing yacht ever made, is 417 feet long and features three towering masts, a pool, several decks and a supporting yacht with a helipad.

Bezos named the boat to symbolize new beginnings

When it came to naming his one-of-a-kind boat, Bezos went with the name Koru. Koru is Māori for loop or coil and is symbolized by a spiral shape. Koru references a new beginning and ushering in a new phase of life, change and personal growth.

The billionaire has previously explained how important the Koru meaning is to him. In January 2022, Bezos posted a since-deleted photo with Sánchez from a New Year’s Eve party and wrote about prioritizing “personal growth.”

“The new year is also a great time to take stock and focus on personal growth, renewal, rebirth, and paying careful attention to each moment of your life,” he wrote. “The good and the bad. All of it. Celebrate and grow.”

It’s believed to be the largest sailing yacht in the world

Koru is believed to be the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Boat International. The vessel, which was made by Netherlands-based custom yacht builder Oceanco, is 417 feet long and includes three towering masts, several decks, a pool atop the aft deck and seating on the bowsprit, per the outlet.

According to Oceanco, the superyacht’s exterior was designed by Dutch company Dykstra Naval Architecture, while the interior was handled by the Mlinaric Henry & Zervudachi interior design firm.

Though neither Bezos nor Sánchez has shared photos of Koru’s interior, Oceanco, which has not confirmed Koru’s ownership, described the interior as “timeless, contemporary style, with natural wood tones complemented by a palette of warm neutrals and beautifully patterned textiles.”

Meanwhile, Robert B. MacKay, who wrote the 2021 book The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars, told The New York Times, “With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts, it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

In addition to the main yacht, Koru also includes a supporting 250-foot-long yacht with a helipad. The “shadow yacht” is named Abeona, per Boat International.

Koru features a wooden mermaid sculpture

One of the more identifiable features of Koru is a wooden mermaid sculpture attached to the boat’s forepeak. The sculpture shows a female mermaid outfitted with gold embellishments — including a necklace with the Koru symbol.

Initially, people speculated whether the sculpture was based on Sánchez, but she later clarified that the statue is Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, fertility, war and gold.

“I’m very flattered, but it’s not [me],” Sánchez told Vogue in December 2023.

Bezos and Sánchez have vacationed on the yacht all over the world

Ever since Bezos was able to officially set sail on Koru, he and Sánchez have traveled the world on the boat. The couple were first seen spending time on Koru in Mallorca in May 2023. Later that same month, Bezos proposed to Sánchez aboard Koru while vacationing in the south of France.

“Everyone is thrilled and so excited for them,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “They see how madly in love they are. They knew this day would come, but Jeff kept it a complete surprise. It was so romantic.”

Bezos and Sánchez celebrated their engagement that summer by sailing around Europe. During their engagement vacation, they ventured to Ibiza, the south of France and Cannes for the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

“They have been in a great mood and are obviously enjoying their trip,” a source told PEOPLE in May 2023.

They continued traveling around the world that summer and stopped in Portofino, Italy, in June 2023. By July of that year, they were photographed kissing while traveling in Capri, Italy. TMZ also obtained photos showing their celebrity pals Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King onboard for the trip.

In addition to their jam-packed 2023 summer, they have also traveled through the Balearic Islands, St. Barts, the Balearic Islands and Florida.

In 2022, Rotterdam’s historic De Hef bridge was temporarily dismantled to accommodate the yacht

Before Bezos set sail on Koru, a historic bridge in the Netherlands needed to be temporarily altered to accommodate the yacht’s height.

In 2022, the city of Rotterdam, which is a significant port city, dismantled part of the Koningshaven Bridge, which was built in 1927 and is a national monument. A spokesperson for the city told the Washington Post at the time that the bridge had a clearance of 13 feet, so they needed to dismantle the middle section of the bridge for the yacht to safely pass through. The representative also confirmed that Bezos was covering the cost of the dismantling and reassembling.

“From an economic perspective, we attach great importance to preserving employment,” Frances van Heijst told the publication.

Bezos and Sánchez hosted their 2023 engagement party on Koru

In August 2023, PEOPLE confirmed that they held an engagement party on Koru on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Some of the celebrity guests in attendance included Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kris Jenner, Corey Gamble and Queen Rania of Jordan.

Days before their June 2025 nuptials in Venice, the engaged couple were also photographed hosting a foam party aboard the luxury vessel. However, it is unclear if the party was part of their pre-wedding festivities or to celebrate Sánchez’s son Evan’s 19th birthday.
