Revisiting Brokeback Mountain: Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams Come Together at Ralph Lauren’s Spectacular Show, Two Decades On

Nearly two decades after audiences first encountered the poignant love story of Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, which left many in tears, the on-screen wives of these characters recently had an unexpected reunion.
Stars of Brokeback Mountain, Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams, who portrayed the wives of Jack (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis (played by Heath Ledger), respectively, were spotted sitting together in the front row during Ralph Lauren’s unveiling of the Fall 2025 Ready-to-Wear collection on Thursday, April 17.

In contrast to the Western attire featured in the 2005 drama, the actresses showcased modern fashion by wearing head-to-toe Ralph Lauren at the star-studded event held at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City.
Hathaway, 42, opted for sequined, distressed jeans in a warm khaki hue, paired with a matching trench coat and a simple scoop-neck white undershirt. Her sleek, high ponytail and gold accessories complemented her outfit, although she removed a large pair of black sunglasses upon entering the gallery.
Williams, 44, also embraced a neutral palette with oversized outerwear, donning a long gray trench coat that reached her ankles, cinched at the waist. A similarly toned dress peeked out beneath, and she completed her monochromatic look with black pumps and a matching purse, alongside her signature blonde bob.
The stylish pair sat together in the gallery’s front row and were joined by Naomi Watts, who was seen chatting with Hathaway.
Although Hathaway and Williams’ roles in Brokeback Mountain represent their only collaboration, Hathaway later reunited with her on-screen husband Gyllenhaal for the 2010 film Love & Other Drugs.
Similarly, while Williams and Ledger did not rekindle their on-screen relationship, they did share an off-screen romance. The two fell in love during the filming of the Ang Lee-directed movie and welcomed their daughter, Matilda Rose, in October 2005, shortly before the film’s release. They separated in September 2007, and Ledger tragically passed away from an accidental drug overdose on January 22, 2008.
The cast of Brokeback Mountain, which also featured Kate Mara, Linda Cardellini, Randy Quaid, and Anna Faris, has expressed fond memories of the film over the years. Recently, Williams reflected that after receiving her first Oscar nomination for the 2005 drama, she felt “a little bit frozen for a moment, creatively.” The film was nominated for eight Oscars and won three: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
Williams shared her thoughts on Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist in 2023, recalling how unnerving it was to have that level of attention. “Like, what do you do? What do you do next?” she asked. “I never really had attention on me before in that kind of way, and I think that that attention can be sort of destabilizing.”
