Sam Nivola Says Parents Emily Mortimer, Alessandro Nivola ‘Really Didn’t Want’ Him to Be an Actor as He Talks ‘Nepo Baby’ Label

Sam Nivola Addresses “Nepo Baby” Label

Sam Nivola, son of actors Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola, has addressed the “nepo baby” label in a recent interview with Cooper Koch for Variety’s Actors on Actors.

The two actors discussed their experiences working on their respective projects: Koch on Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and Nivola on The White Lotus.

Nivola, whose parents have enjoyed long and successful careers in the entertainment industry, revealed that his parents actually discouraged him from pursuing acting.

“My whole thing was that my parents really didn’t want me to be an actor, which I totally get — I don’t know if I’d want my kid to be an actor,” Nivola, 21, admitted. “It’s a really mentally tough career to be in.”

He continued, “Even if I had no success, I would want to be doing it. But they really didn’t want me to do it.”

In recent years, Nivola has appeared in several notable projects, including The Perfect Couple and White Noise. His sister, May Rose, also featured in White Noise. Despite the exciting opportunity, Alessandro had previously mentioned that acting “definitely wasn’t something we were encouraging” for their children.

The director of White Noise, Noah Baumbach, reached out to Sam and May’s school, searching for children to cast in the film. Alessandro shared that Baumbach was thrilled to have the opportunity to cast the Nivola siblings.

“At that point, it felt cruel to tell them they couldn’t do it because it was such a high-class project,” Alessandro said.

Interestingly, Sam and May have never sought acting advice from their parents. “They never come to me for advice for anything,” Alessandro said with a laugh. “They haven’t even asked me once to read through a scene with them.”

Alessandro and Mortimer, who have recently featured in Kraven the Hunter and Paddington in Peru, respectively, have been married since 2003. Stay tuned for more updates from Eternal Pen on your favorite celebrities.
