Selena Quintanilla: The Heartfelt Struggle Between Motherhood Dreams and Musical Ambitions Uncovered in New Documentary

Prior to Selena Quintanilla’s untimely demise in 1995, she conveyed her wish to become a mother.
In a discussion highlighted in Selena y Los Dinos, which debuted Wednesday at SXSW, the Mexican-American artist candidly talked about her aspiration to have a family of her own.
“I would absolutely adore having children eventually. I believe it is a segment of my femininity that, as a woman, I sense that I am lacking,” Selena mentioned to a journalist.
However, she envisioned this occurring “more so in the future. I feel that I must accomplish all of the ambitions that I have in my mind.”
“And in the future, when I have the time to look after my children, then, naturally, I’m going to have kids. Like six,” she chuckled. “Another group.”
In another segment of the film, the “Como la Flor” artist’s sibling, Suzette, shared the heartfelt discussions they had regarding their aspirations.
“After she married Chris, she would constantly tell me about her dreams. She would remove her makeup and typically style her hair in a bun,” Suzette, now 57, reminisces.
She added, “We would discuss getting married, about my future marriage, about her having children, her kids and my kids were going to play together, and we intended to raise them collectively. Ordinary matters.”
While Selena’s parents were displeased with her secretly marrying her guitarist Chris Pérez in 1992, in retrospect, Suzette is pleased with how their romance transpired.
“I’m sort of thankful that she did it the way she did because she got to know love and was a spouse,” she asserts. “What if she had chosen to wait?”
The documentary, which bears the name of her family band, honors the “Baila Esta Cumbia” singer’s life and impact through previously unseen footage from the family’s personal collection.
The “Dreaming of You” singer was just 23 years old when she was tragically shot by Yolanda Saldívar, the former president of Selena’s fan organization and manager of the singer’s clothing shops, in March 1995.
PEOPLE is commemorating Selena’s legacy in a reissue of a special edition dedicated to the artist, which is available for purchase here.
