Thunderbolts* Post-Credit Scene Ending, Explained: How Those Surprises Change the Future of Marvel Movies

Thunderbolts* is finally hitting movie theaters around the country, and with a new Marvel Cinematic Universe release comes a new set of post-credits scenes for MCU fans to dissect.

Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Lewis Pullman, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell and Geraldine Viswanathan star in Thunderbolts*, which brings together MCU veteran Bucky Barnes (Stan, 42) with Yelena Belova (Pugh, 29), Alexei (Harbour, 50), Ava Starr / Ghost (John-Kamen, 35) Taskmaster (Kurylenko, 45) and John Walker (Russell, 38) to create the latest team.

The Thunderbolts learn they can work better as a team than alone in a universe currently lacking a unified Avengers-type team as they encounter a new superhuman in Robert Reynolds (Pullman, 32).

Thunderbolts* precedes two majorly important MCU movies coming in the next year: The Fantastic Four: First Steps is in theaters July 25, then Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters May 1, 2026. With all that in mind, here is everything to know about the movie’s end-credits scenes.

How many mid- and post-credits scenes does Thunderbolts* have?

Like a number of MCU movies, Thunderbolts* contains two extra scenes in its credits: one mid-credits scene featuring Harbour’s character Alexei / Red Guardian, and a second post-credits sequence that shows audiences the impact of the movie’s events on its lead cast and a glimpse at where the larger universe is headed for future movies.

What happens in the Thunderbolts* post-credit scenes?

Thunderbolts*’ amusing mid-credits scene shows Harbour’s character Alexei shopping at a grocery store, where he is delighted to find that he and the rest of the Thunderbolts — whom Louis-Drefyus’ character Valentina renames as the New Avengers at the end of the movie — are now featured on Wheaties cereal boxes.

The second post-credits sequence is set some time after the events of the movie as Yelena, Alexei, Bob, Ava, John and Bucky are settling in to the Avengers Tower in New York City to assume their roles as the New Avengers. Bucky notes that he has had negative conversations with Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, regarding the team’s use of the Avengers name after Sam briefly ponders putting together a new Avengers team in February’s Captain America: Brave New World.

Suddenly, the team are alerted to a massive spacecraft appearing seemingly out of nowhere in space near Earth — audiences are shown the spacecraft bearing a larger number “4,” implying the characters from July’s Fantastic Four: First Steps have arrived at the MCU’s earth.

What does Thunderbolts* ‘s post-credit scene mean for the future of Marvel?

Thunderbolts*’ post-credits sequence draws a direct connection between the new movie, July’s Fantastic Four film and next year’s Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios announced in March that the lead cast members of each film will star in Doomsday alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom, several actors from the 2000s X-Men trilogy and a host of other Avengers franchise favorites.

With the Thunderbolts themselves acting as the New Avengers by the end of the movie, the group seem primed for a confrontation with the Fantastic Four, comprised of Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm/The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing). July’s First Steps will likely show how and why the superhero group travel from their 1960s-set world to that of the current MCU’s for Doomsday.
