Navigating Love: A Polyfamily’s Journey of Acceptance and Loss

Relationships can be complex, especially when they involve multiple partners.

In the premiere of a new series, Alysia, Tyler, Sean, and Taya offer a glimpse into their lives as a closed quad relationship. During a parents’ night out before the arrival of their fifth child, the two couples reflected on the sacrifices they’ve made for love.

“When I first came out as polyamorous to my mom, she was immediately supportive, though she had questions and concerns,” Taya explained. “Her biggest worry was that someone would get hurt. But she was supportive and happy to meet Tyler and Alysia.”

“When we told her we wanted to live together, I think that’s when she realized this wasn’t a phase, that this was something we truly wanted,” she continued. “The more time she spent with us, getting to know Tyler and Alysia, and seeing the love between the four of us, I think she realized this was something that would last.”

However, not everyone has been as understanding. Alysia revealed that she and Tyler have experienced significant loss since forming the quad.

“When we first came out as polyamorous, we lost family members and friends,” she said. “Many people just don’t understand it. I don’t currently have a relationship with my dad and stepmom. Tyler’s mom didn’t understand it at first, and his dad still doesn’t. Sean doesn’t have much family, but Taya’s uncles aren’t accepting of it either.”

“We’ve also had friends, with kids the same age as ours, who don’t know how to answer questions if they arise,” Alysia shared. “People have definitely distanced themselves since finding out we were polyamorous.”

Alysia’s friend, Katheleen, admitted she was initially shocked.

“We were at a mutual friend’s wedding, and [Alysia] said, ‘Hey, we’ve been dating this other couple, and I’d really like you to meet them,'” she recalled, noting her main concern was for Alysia and Tyler’s two children, born before the quad formed. “I was like, ‘What?’ The biggest thing is, what if it doesn’t work out? They started with two kids, and now there are five. How would any changes affect them?”

Taya’s mom, Jill, shared her perspective as a parent of someone in a four-person relationship, saying she simply wanted her daughter “to be happy” and “loved.”

“As crazy as this journey has been, I can’t imagine anything different for her,” she added.

Later, Alysia acknowledged the challenges of seeing Jill’s support for Taya, knowing they don’t all have that.

“There’s definitely some envy when I see Tay’s family being so supportive, open, and welcoming,” Alysia told the cameras. “Of course, I’m envious because I want my family to act the same way.”

“My relationship with my dad is really strained,” she revealed. “When he doesn’t recognize two of my partners as people I’m in a relationship with, when they’re categorized as just friends and not considered family, even though they moved here to be with us, to start a family, to grow our family with love and support, and to be told that he doesn’t think they’re family, it makes it really difficult to come together and find that understanding.”
